The sod and grass seed calculator answers the two questions every new lawn starts with: how many rolls or pallets of sod, or how many pounds of seed. In sod mode, enter the lawn area, pick a cutting-waste allowance — 5% for a simple rectangular yard, 10% for one carved up by curves, beds, and hardscape — and the calculator reports the rolls to order at the standard 10 ft² (2 ft × 5 ft) roll plus the pallets at your supplier’s stated coverage. Pallet coverage is not standardized: suppliers commonly stack 400 to 500 square feet per pallet and some range from 300 to 700, which is why coverage is an input (default 450 ft²) rather than a constant.
Seed mode uses new-lawn seeding rates verified against a published university turf-extension table — University of Tennessee Extension W160-B, "Turfgrass Establishment: Seeding" — encoded at the midpoint of each species range: Kentucky bluegrass 1.75, tall fescue 6.5, perennial ryegrass 5, and common hulled bermudagrass 0.75 pounds per 1,000 square feet. How It Works
- Measure your lawn area in square feet: split the yard into rectangles, triangles, and circles, compute each, and add them up — or take the lot area and subtract the house, driveway, and beds.
- Sod mode: choose the waste allowance. 5% covers straight runs with few cuts; 10% covers curved beds, angled property lines, and yards broken up by walkways where more offcuts are unusable.
- The calculator multiplies area by (1 + waste), divides by 10 ft² per roll for the roll count, and divides by your pallet coverage for the pallet count — both rounded up to whole units with a float-noise guard so an exact multiple never buys an extra roll.
- Seed mode: pick the species and whether you are seeding a new lawn on bare soil or overseeding an existing thin lawn. Pounds = area ÷ 1,000 × rate, halved for overseeding. Pounds are shown to one decimal rather than rounded to bags, because seed bag sizes vary widely.
- Both modes add starter fertilizer at one bag per 5,000 ft² of bare ground. Apply it per your soil test where possible — a soil test from your county extension office beats any default.
- Order sod for same-day installation: rolls dry out and heat up on the pallet within 24 hours in warm weather. Seed in the species’ window — late summer to early fall for cool-season grasses, late spring to early summer for warm-season grasses.
Worked Example
A 2,000 ft² backyard is being sodded with a simple layout, so the 5% waste allowance applies: 2,000 × 1.05 = 2,100 ft². At 10 ft² per roll that is exactly 210 rolls, and at the supplier’s stated 450 ft² per pallet, 2,100 ÷ 450 = 4.67 → 5 pallets. Starter fertilizer covers the bare 2,000 ft² of ground — not the waste-adjusted area — so one 5,000 ft² bag suffices. Had the yard been cut up enough to warrant 10% waste, the order would grow to 2,200 ft² and 220 rolls. Seeding the same 2,000 ft² with tall fescue instead: at the UT Extension W160-B midpoint rate of 6.5 lb per 1,000 ft², a new lawn needs 2 × 6.5 = 13.0 lb of seed, while overseeding a thin existing stand at half rate needs 6.5 lb — plus the same single bag of starter fertilizer.

How do I measure my lawn area?
Break the yard into simple shapes and add them up: length × width for rectangles, ½ × base × height for triangles, and 3.14 × radius² for circles. Walk each dimension with a tape or measuring wheel, sketch the yard, and label the pieces so nothing is counted twice. For a whole lot, it is often faster to take the lot area from the plat and subtract the house footprint, driveway, walks, and planting beds. Should I lay sod or plant seed?
Sod gives an instant, weed-resistant lawn that can be installed through most of the growing season, but it costs several times more per square foot and the species selection is limited to what local farms grow. Seed costs far less, offers the full range of cultivars, and produces turf that establishes deeper roots in place — but it needs weeks of daily watering, a season or more to fill in, and its planting window is narrower. When should I seed a lawn?

How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
It genuinely varies by supplier, which is why this calculator asks rather than assumes. Farms stack pallets at 400, 450, 500, or even 600–700 square feet depending on roll or slab size and pallet weight limits — anywhere from about 300 to 700 ft² is sold as "a pallet." Call your supplier, ask what their pallet covers, and enter that number; ordering by the wrong pallet assumption is how projects end up a half-pallet short on a Saturday afternoon.
Why is my seed bag’s rate different from the calculator’s?
The encoded rates are midpoints of the University of Tennessee Extension W160-B table, which publishes ranges (tall fescue 5–8 lb, Kentucky bluegrass 1.5–2 lb per 1,000 ft²) because the right rate depends on cultivar, seed size, purity, and germination percentage. Blends and coated seed shift the number further, and some labels state rates in pure live seed.
