One multiplication, one genuine decision
Estimating mulch or topsoil is the easiest takeoff in landscaping: area times depth. Measure the beds in square feet, pick a depth in inches, and the volume is area × depth/12 in cubic feet, divided by 27 for cubic yards. The area is a fact you measure; the depth is the only real decision in the formula, and it swings the order more than any measuring error can. The same 500 ft² of beds needs 4.63 yd³ at a 3 in dressing but only two-thirds of that at 2 in — every inch of depth is a third of the standard mulch layer.
That’s why the useful question is never "how much mulch per square foot" in the abstract but "how deep, and why." Depth is where horticulture enters the arithmetic, and it differs sharply between materials and jobs — a distinction the mulch and topsoil calculator makes explicit by asking for depth up front rather than assuming one.
The right depth is a horticultural claim, not a preference
For mulch on beds, the settled target is 2–3 in: enough to suppress weeds and slow evaporation, shallow enough not to smother roots. An annual refresh over existing mulch usually needs only 1–2 in, which cuts the repeat order substantially — 1,000 ft² of established beds refreshed at 2 in is 6.17 yd³, where the same area mulched from bare soil at 3 in would take half again more. One habit matters more than any quantity: keep mulch pulled a few inches back from trunks and stems, because piling it against bark traps moisture and invites rot and pests.
Topsoil depths are job-specific in a different way. Establishing a new lawn calls for 4–6 in of quality soil; patching bare spots needs 1–2 in; topdressing an existing lawn is shallower still, commonly ¼–½ in per pass. Compost for a vegetable bed typically goes on at about 2 in — 500 ft² of garden takes 3.09 yd³. Same formula throughout; the depth carries all the meaning.
Bags versus bulk: find the crossover before the checkout line
Mulch and soil sell two ways — the 2 ft³ bag (with a 3 ft³ large size) and the loose cubic yard — and the conversion between them is the whole comparison: a cubic yard equals 13.5 standard 2 ft³ bags, or 9 of the large ones. At $4 per 2 ft³ bag, a yard of bagged mulch costs 13.5 × $4 = $54 in material, while bulk mulch commonly runs $30–50 per yard delivered loose. Bags claw back value on small jobs through convenience: no delivery fee, no driveway pile to move by dusk, and unopened bags store cleanly.
The crossover arrives faster than most buyers expect. The 500 ft² bed job at 3 in — 4.63 yd³, or 63 bags — already favors bulk: $252 in bags against $208.33 loose at those prices, and the gap widens with every additional bed. As a shelf-side rule, a job over a yard or two is usually cheaper delivered, while under half a yard the bags win. A 100 ft² bed at 3 in needs just 13 bags — comfortably a car-trunk quantity that no delivery minimum can compete with.
Weight is the constraint nobody prices in
Volume decides the price; weight decides the logistics. Representative loose densities per cubic yard: hardwood mulch around 600 lb (the honest range is 400–800 depending on moisture and species), screened topsoil 2,200 lb (2,000–2,400), and finished compost 1,300 lb (1,000–1,600). The spread between materials is nearly a factor of four, which is why "a yard" tells you nothing about a load until the material is named.
The 500 ft² mulch order weighs 2,778 lb — 1.39 tons — which a delivery truck shrugs at and a half-ton pickup can only chip away at, roughly a yard of dry mulch per trip. The same 4.63 yd³ in screened topsoil would weigh 10,185 lb, about 5.09 tons: no pickup arrangement survives that, since a single ton of soil doesn’t even fill half a yard. Checking the load weight before choosing bags, pickup runs, or delivery is the difference between a plan and a surprise.
New lawns: where topsoil leaves the bag economy entirely
Seeding or sodding a new lawn at the recommended 4–6 in of topsoil produces quantities that dwarf bed work. At just 4 in, every 1,000 ft² of lawn takes 12.35 yd³ — nominally 167 bags, and at topsoil density about 13.58 tons. Nobody bags that; new-lawn soil is bulk delivery by definition, often in multiple truckloads, and the depth decision (4 versus 6 in) moves the order by half.
What goes on top of the soil has its own arithmetic, and the sod & grass seed calculator carries it. Sod is counted in 10 ft² rolls (the standard 2 × 5 ft) with a 5% cutting-waste allowance for simple layouts or 10% for cut-up yards — 1,000 ft² becomes 105 rolls at 5% — and in pallets at whatever coverage your supplier actually stacks, anywhere from 300 to 700 ft². Seed goes by species, per the University of Tennessee Extension W160-B rate table: 6.5 lb of tall fescue per 1,000 ft² for a new lawn, but only 1.75 lb of Kentucky bluegrass or 0.75 lb of hulled bermudagrass, with overseeding at half the new-lawn rate. Soil, sod, and seed are three separate line items that happen to share one measured area.
Sanity checks that catch a bad order
Coverage per yard is the quickest cross-check: a cubic yard spreads over about 108 ft² at 3 in deep, 162 ft² at 2 in, and 324 ft² at a 1 in topdressing. If the beds total 600 ft² and the quote says two yards at 3 in, the coverage math (2 × 108 = 216 ft²) exposes the shortfall before the truck leaves. Running the numbers both ways — area to volume, then volume back to coverage — costs a minute and catches transposed digits, wrong depths, and optimistic supplier estimates alike.
The other check is scope: this arithmetic and these densities are for organic materials — wood mulch, screened topsoil, compost. Gravel, crushed stone, and stone mulch are several times denser (roughly 2,400–2,900 lb/yd³) and often involve compaction, which changes both the order volume and the delivery plan; mineral materials belong to the gravel & aggregate calculator.
