Two orders for the same yard
Sod and seed produce the same lawn on very different invoices and calendars. Sod is turf someone else already grew: it costs several times more per square foot, the species selection is limited to what local farms grow, and it arrives as a finished, weed-resistant surface that can go down through most of the growing season. Seed costs far less, offers the full range of cultivars, and produces turf whose roots establish in place, deeper — but it demands weeks of daily watering, takes a season or more to fill in, and only works inside a fairly narrow planting window.
The trade-offs get concrete fast once a real yard is on the table, so this guide threads one through both routes: a 2,000 ft² backyard, stripped to bare soil and ready for turf. The arithmetic on each side is short. The decisions around the arithmetic — waste, pallet coverage, species, and the calendar — are where orders go wrong, and they’re what the rest of this article is about.
The sod order: rolls, pallets, and one question for the supplier
Sod arrives as rolls, and the standard roll covers 10 ft² — 2 ft × 5 ft. Cutting waste is a genuine allowance here, because rolls get trimmed around curves, beds, and hardscape: 5% covers a simple rectangular yard, 10% one carved up by curved beds, angled property lines, and walkways. The backyard with a simple layout orders 2,000 × 1.05 = 2,100 ft², which at 10 ft² per roll is exactly 210 rolls; the cut-up version at 10% grows to 220. Pallets are where sod orders go sideways, because pallet coverage is not standardized. Farms commonly stack 400–500 ft² per pallet, and the range sold as “a pallet” runs from about 300 to 700 ft². At a supplier-stated 450 ft², the backyard’s 2,100 ft² works out to 4.67 pallets — and you’ll pay for 5. Before committing, put two questions to the supplier in one call — whether partial pallets are sold, and what their pallet actually covers — and figure from that answer, because ordering on an assumed coverage is how a yard ends up a half-pallet short. Sod is also perishable: schedule delivery for same-day installation, because rolls heat up and dry out on the pallet within 24 hours in warm weather.
The seed order: the species sets the pounds
Seed quantities swing by nearly an order of magnitude with species, because seed size does. The planning rates used here are the midpoints of the University of Tennessee Extension W160-B seeding table: tall fescue at 6.5 lb per 1,000 ft², perennial ryegrass at 5, Kentucky bluegrass at 1.75, and hulled bermudagrass at just 0.75. Seeding the 2,000 ft² backyard as a new tall fescue lawn takes 2 × 6.5 = 13.0 lb; the same yard in Kentucky bluegrass takes 3.5 lb, and in bermudagrass only 1.5 lb — tiny-seeded species simply plant more lawn per pound.
Overseeding a thin existing lawn runs at half the new-lawn rate — the aggressive end of NC State Extension’s guidance that seeding into existing vegetation may use a 25–50% lower rate — so the fescue backyard overseeds at 6.5 lb. And the published rates are ranges, not points: W160-B gives tall fescue 5–8 lb and Kentucky bluegrass 1.5–2 lb per 1,000 ft², because the right rate shifts with cultivar, seed purity, and germination percentage. When the bag on the shelf states a different rate, the bag wins — it’s specific to the seed lot you actually bought, where these rates are for planning the shopping trip.
The calendar and the ground get a vote
Timing is the least negotiable difference between the routes. Cool-season grasses — Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass — establish best from late summer into early fall, when the soil is warm, the air is cooling, and a full mild season lies ahead; early spring is the second-best window. Warm-season grasses like bermudagrass want late spring through early summer, so they’re well established before frost. Sod is far more forgiving, going down through most of the growing season — which is often the deciding fact when a construction project finishes in exactly the wrong month for seed.
The ground votes too. A slope that would erode before seed could establish justifies sod’s premium all by itself, and so does a high-traffic yard that can’t be closed off for weeks of establishment; large areas on a budget usually tip to seed. Whichever route wins, starter fertilizer is counted the same way: about one bag per 5,000 ft² of bare ground, so a single bag covers the example backyard. Note that it’s the measured ground area that counts, not the waste-adjusted sod order — cutting waste is sod you discard, and the soil underneath doesn’t get bigger. A soil test from your county extension office beats any default on what to apply.
The backyard, both ways
The 2,000 ft² backyard, end to end. Sod route: a simple layout takes the 5% allowance, so 2,100 ft² of sod — 210 rolls, or 5 pallets at the supplier’s stated 450 ft², plus one bag of starter fertilizer on the bare 2,000 ft², installed the day the truck arrives. Seed route: 13.0 lb of tall fescue for a new lawn — 6.5 lb if it’s an overseed of thin existing turf — the same single bag of starter fertilizer, sown in the species’ window and watered daily for weeks.
Scale moves the numbers but not the logic. A 1,000 ft² front lawn is 105 rolls or 3 pallets on the sod side and 6.5 lb of fescue on the seed side; a 10,000 ft² lawn is 1,050 rolls against 65.0 lb. Somewhere along that scale, sod’s several-times price premium stops being a convenience charge and becomes the whole decision — which is why the honest comparison is two complete orders for your actual square footage, not a per-roll price against a per-pound one.
