About Flooring Calculator (Boxes, Waste & Underlayment)
The flooring calculator counts the boxes of plank or laminate flooring — and the underlayment rolls — needed to floor a list of rooms. Each room is entered as length × width in feet and summed into a gross floor area; areas that will not be floored, such as kitchen islands, hearths, and built-in cabinetry, are entered as exclusions and subtracted before anything is counted.
Boxes are figured from the net area with a waste allowance keyed to the installation layout: 10% for a straight lay, 15% for a diagonal lay, and 20% for herringbone or parquet patterns, whose short cuts waste more of every plank. The net-plus-waste area is divided by the coverage of one box and rounded up to whole boxes. Coverage varies by product — anywhere from under 10 ft² for wide solid planks to 30 ft² or more for laminate — so read it off the carton label rather than assuming the 22 ft² default. Underlayment is counted as representative 100-ft² rolls on the net area, and an optional price per box turns the box count into a material cost. Treat the totals as a buying estimate: trade practice, not a spec.
How It Works
- Add each room (or hallway, closet, landing) as length × width in feet — up to 20 rooms are summed into the gross floor area.
- Add exclusions for anything inside those rooms that will not be floored, such as a kitchen island, a fireplace hearth, or built-in cabinetry; their area is subtracted before boxes are counted.
- Pick the installation layout: straight (10% waste), diagonal (15%), or herringbone/parquet (20%). Complex rooms with many jogs can justify stepping up one level.
- Enter the coverage per box from the product carton (the default 22 ft² is only representative) and, optionally, the price per box for a cost estimate.
- Read the results: net and gross area, planned area with waste, boxes to buy, 100-ft² underlayment rolls, and the flooring cost when priced. A chart compares the box count across all three layouts.
Worked Example
A living room of 12 × 14 ft (168 ft²) and a bedroom of 10 × 12 ft (120 ft²) give 288 ft² gross. A 4 × 2 ft hearth (8 ft²) is excluded, for a net of 280 ft². Laid straight at 10% waste the planned area is 280 × 1.10 = 308 ft²; with boxes that cover 22 ft² each, that is 308 / 22 = 14 boxes exactly. The same job laid herringbone at 20% waste plans 336 ft² and needs ceil(336 / 22) = 16 boxes. Underlayment is ceil(280 / 100) = 3 rolls of 100 ft². At $65 per box, the straight-lay flooring costs 14 × 65 = $910.00.

How much flooring do I need?
Multiply each room's length by its width in feet, add the rooms together, and subtract anything that will not be floored (islands, hearths, built-ins). Then add waste for the layout — 10% straight, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone — and divide by the coverage of one box, rounding up. Two rooms of 12 × 14 and 10 × 12 minus an 8 ft² hearth net 280 ft², which is 14 boxes at 22 ft² per box laid straight.
What waste percentage should I use for flooring?
Use 10% for a straight lay in ordinary rectangular rooms, where most end cuts start the next row. Use 15% for a diagonal lay — every row starts and ends with an angled cut that is often unusable. Use 20% for herringbone and parquet patterns, whose short pieces and directional cuts waste the most material. Rooms with many jogs, closets, or angles can justify stepping up one level, and leftover full planks are worth keeping for future repairs.
How many square feet are in a box of flooring?
It varies widely by product — there is no standard. Laminate boxes commonly cover 18–30 ft², luxury vinyl plank about 18–28 ft², and solid or engineered hardwood often under 20 ft², with wide planks lower still. This calculator defaults to a representative 22 ft² per box, but you should always read the actual coverage printed on the carton of the product you are buying and enter that.
Do I need underlayment, and how much?
Most floating laminate and vinyl plank floors need an underlayment layer for moisture control, sound, and minor subfloor leveling — unless the product has one pre-attached (many LVP lines do). The calculator counts representative 100-ft² rolls on the net floor area: a 280 ft² job needs 3 rolls. Underlayment is not wasted at the layout rate, so it is counted without the flooring waste factor.
Should I subtract the kitchen island or cabinets from the flooring area?
Subtract areas the flooring genuinely will not go under: a large fixed island, a masonry hearth, or existing built-ins that stay. Floating floors are usually NOT run under new cabinets or islands anyway, since the cabinet weight pins the floor and blocks its expansion movement. Leave small obstructions in as implicit waste — only exclusions of several square feet are worth entering.
How many boxes of flooring should I buy extra?
The waste allowance in the box count already covers cutting loss for the chosen layout, so you do not need to add more on top of it. That said, keeping one unopened box after the job is cheap insurance for future board replacements, since dye lots change and products get discontinued. If your room is unusually cut up or you are a first-time installer, step the layout waste up one level instead of guessing.
