About Drywall Calculator (Sheets, Mud, Tape & Screws)

The drywall calculator counts the gypsum board sheets and the finishing materials — joint compound, tape, screws, and corner bead — needed to hang and finish a room or a list of wall segments. In room mode it boards the four walls of a rectangular room, 2 x (length + width) x height, and optionally the ceiling; in walls mode it sums the area of each wall you enter. Door and window openings are subtracted before anything is counted.

Sheets are figured from the net area with a waste allowance — 10% for a standard room, 15% for a complex layout with many angles and cuts — divided by the sheet area (32, 40, or 48 ft2 for 4x8, 4x10, and 4x12). The finishing quantities use representative trade coverage rates of the kind USG publishes as estimating rules of thumb: about 0.053 lb of joint compound, 0.37 lineal feet of tape, and one screw per square foot of finished board. Actual coverage varies with the finish texture level, the framing spacing, and the installer, so treat the totals as a buying estimate, not a spec.

How It Works

  1. Pick a mode: room (length, width, wall height, and an include-ceiling toggle) or walls (add each wall segment as length x height, up to 20).
  2. Add the door and window openings as width x height in feet; their area is subtracted from the gross board area before sheets and finishing materials are counted.
  3. Choose the sheet size (4x8, 4x10, or 4x12) and the waste preset: standard 10%, or complex 15% for rooms with many angles, soffits, or small cuts.
  4. Enter the lineal feet of outside corners that need corner bead; the tool reports it as 8-ft sticks.
  5. Read the results: net and gross area, sheets to buy, joint compound in pounds and 4.5-gallon buckets, tape in lineal feet and 500-ft rolls, screws and 1000-count boxes, and corner bead sticks. A chart compares the sheet count across all three sheet sizes.

Worked Example

A 12 x 16 ft room with 8-ft walls is boarded including the ceiling. The walls are 2 x (12 + 16) x 8 = 448 ft2 and the ceiling adds 12 x 16 = 192 ft2, for 640 ft2 gross. A 3 x 7 door (21 ft2) and a 3 x 5 window (15 ft2) bring the net area to 604 ft2. With 4x8 sheets at 10% waste the sheet count is ceil(604 x 1.10 / 32) = 21 sheets. Finishing takes 604 x 0.053 = 32.0 lb of joint compound (one 4.5-gal bucket), 604 x 0.37 = 223.5 LF of tape (one 500-ft roll), and 604 screws (one 1000-count box). The 25 LF of outside corners needs ceil(25 / 8) = 4 sticks of 8-ft corner bead.

How much drywall do I need for a room?

Board area for a rectangular room is the wall perimeter times the height — 2 x (length + width) x height — plus length x width if the ceiling is boarded, minus door and window openings. Divide the net area by the sheet area (32 ft2 for a 4x8, 40 for a 4x10, 48 for a 4x12) after adding waste, and round up. A 12 x 16 ft room with 8-ft walls and the ceiling nets 604 ft2 after a door and a window, which is 21 sheets of 4x8 at 10% waste.

What waste percentage should I use for drywall?

Use 10% for an ordinary rectangular room where most cuts land on another usable piece. Use 15% for complex layouts — many angles, soffits, stairwells, closets, or rooms whose dimensions fight the sheet module — where more offcuts end up too small to reuse. Waste covers cutting loss and breakage, not a change in the finished area.

Should I subtract doors and windows from the drywall area?

Yes — this calculator subtracts the full opening area before counting sheets and finishing materials. Some estimators leave small windows in as implicit waste; if you prefer that habit, simply omit the small openings and keep the 10% waste preset. Do subtract large openings such as double doors, sliders, and pass-throughs, or the sheet count inflates quickly.

How much joint compound per square foot of drywall?

A common trade rule of thumb is about 0.053 lb of all-purpose compound per square foot of board for a taped three-coat Level 4 finish — roughly one 4.5-gallon, 61.7-lb bucket per 1,160 ft2. Heavier textures, skim coats (Level 5), and beginner-thick coats use noticeably more, while a bare garage finish uses less, so buy an extra bucket on large jobs.

How many screws per sheet of drywall?

The tool uses one screw per square foot of board, a representative rate for studs at 16 inches on center — about 32 screws for a 4x8 sheet, matching a screw every 12 inches in the field and closer along the edges. Framing at 24 inches on center uses fewer, and ceilings (screws every 12 inches on every joist) use slightly more. Screws are cheap; round up to whole 1,000-count boxes as the calculator does.

What sheet size should I use: 4x8, 4x10, or 4x12?

Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints — the hardest joints to finish — so hangers prefer the longest sheet that can reach the room and be handled safely. A 4x12 spans a full 12-ft wall with no butt joint at all. Use 4x8 for tight stairs, small rooms, and solo work; 4x10 and 4x12 for open rooms and ceilings with helpers or a lift.
