The baseboard and trim calculator turns a room list into a lumberyard order: enter each room's length, width, and door count, and it computes the installed lineal footage as the rectangular perimeter 2(L+W) minus 3 feet for every door opening — the standard interior door deduction used in trim takeoffs. Rooms where the door openings consume the whole perimeter (a tiny closet with doors on two sides) floor at zero rather than going negative, with a note so you can see which room did it.

The totals card sums installed lineal feet across every room, adds a 10% waste allowance for cuts, miters, and bad ends, and rounds the result up into full 8-, 12-, or 16-ft sticks — longer stock means fewer joints along a wall. Caulk is figured at one tube per 40 lineal feet of the INSTALLED length, not the waste-inflated purchase length, because offcuts in the scrap pile never get caulked. The inside and outside corner counts come back with the trade joinery advisories: cope inside corners so the joint stays tight through seasonal movement, and miter outside corners at 45 degrees.

How It Works

  1. Add one row per room with its length and width in feet and the number of door openings. Each room's installed baseboard is 2 x (length + width) minus 3 ft per door; if the doors deduct more than the perimeter, the room floors at 0 LF and the result flags it.
  2. The installed lineal feet sum across all rooms, then a 10% waste factor covers miters, copes, splices, and damaged ends: purchase LF = total x 1.10.
  3. Pick a stick length (8, 12, or 16 ft). Sticks to buy = purchase LF divided by the stick length, rounded UP to whole sticks — you cannot buy a fraction of a board. Longer sticks mean fewer mid-wall splices on long runs.
  4. Painter's caulk for the top edge and nail holes is estimated at one tube per 40 LF of INSTALLED baseboard (the pre-waste total) — the waste allowance is material you cut off and discard, so it is excluded from the caulk figure.
  5. Enter the inside and outside corner counts for your floor plan. They do not change the material math (each corner is a joint, not extra length) but the results panel returns the joinery practice for each: cope the inside corners, miter the outside corners.

Worked Example

A living room 12 x 14 ft with 2 door openings needs 2 x (12 + 14) - 2 x 3 = 52 - 6 = 46 LF of baseboard. A 10 x 10 ft bedroom with 1 door adds 2 x 20 - 3 = 37 LF, for 83 LF installed across both rooms. With 10% waste the purchase length is 83 x 1.10 = 91.3 LF; in 16-ft sticks that is 91.3 / 16 = 5.71, rounded up to 6 sticks (in 8-ft sticks, 91.3 / 8 = 11.4 rounds up to 12). Caulk is figured on the 83 LF actually installed: 83 / 40 = 2.08, rounded up to 3 tubes. The 8 inside corners get coped and the 2 outside corners get mitered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I cope or miter baseboard corners?

Cope the inside corners and miter the outside corners — that is the finish-carpentry convention this tool reports. A coped inside joint cuts the profile of one piece to sit over the face of the other, so it stays closed when the wood shrinks across seasons; an inside miter opens a visible gap at the first dry winter. Outside corners cannot be coped, so they get a 45-degree miter — test-fit first because drywall corners are rarely a true 90, then glue and pin the miter before nailing the run to the wall.

Why does the calculator deduct 3 feet per door?

Three feet is the standard trim-takeoff allowance for an interior door opening: a common 32-inch door plus its casing legs lands close to 3 ft of wall base that gets no baseboard. It is deliberately a round trade number, not a measurement of your actual doors — a 24-inch closet door deducts slightly too much and a 36-inch entry slightly too little, but across a whole house the errors wash out and the 10% waste factor absorbs the rest. For wide cased openings (double doors, pass-throughs), count them as 2 doors to deduct 6 ft.

What waste factor does the calculator use, and is 10% enough?

It multiplies the installed total by 1.10 — a 10% allowance for miter and cope offcuts, mid-wall splices that must land where you did not plan, and the occasional damaged or bowed stick. That is the normal figure for rectangular rooms with stock profiles. Bump your order if the plan has many short walls and closets (lots of offcuts), if the trim is a pricey hardwood you cannot re-buy from a matching lot, or if you are a first-time coper expecting some scrapped joints.

Which stick length should I buy — 8, 12, or 16 ft?

The longest sticks you can transport and handle: every wall longer than a stick needs a scarf splice, and splices are the joints most likely to telegraph through paint. A 15-ft wall takes one 16-ft stick with no joint, but two 8-footers with a splice. The tool counts whole sticks by dividing the with-waste footage by your chosen length and rounding up, so compare the counts — sometimes 12-ft stock covers the plan with less leftover than 16-ft.

Why is caulk figured on the installed length instead of the with-waste length?

Because you caulk what ends up on the wall, not what you bought. The 10% waste allowance is offcuts and rejects that go in the scrap pile, so inflating the caulk count by the same factor would systematically overbuy. The tool divides the installed (pre-waste) lineal footage by 40 LF per tube — a typical figure for a top-edge bead plus nail-hole filling — and rounds up to whole tubes.

What if a small closet has more door opening than wall?

The room floors at 0 lineal feet instead of subtracting below zero, and the results flag it. This is a real layout — a reach-in closet with bifold doors across the whole front can have essentially no base to run — so the calculator treats it as a zero-material room rather than an input error. The other rooms in the list still count normally; just check the flagged room in case it actually keeps a short return of base you want to add back as its own small room.
