Start with the walls, not the paint aisle
The single most common paint-buying mistake happens before anyone touches a brush: guessing the quantity from the size of the room instead of the size of the walls. Paint covers wall area, and wall area is a function of the room’s perimeter and its ceiling height, not its floor plan. The arithmetic is short enough to do on the back of the paint chip: add the length and width of the room, double it to get the perimeter, then multiply by the ceiling height. A 12 × 14 ft bedroom has a perimeter of 2 × (12 + 14) = 52 ft; under an 8 ft ceiling that is 52 × 8 = 416 square feet of gross wall.
Notice what that calculation ignores: closets, alcoves, and bump-outs all add perimeter, so if your room is not a clean rectangle, walk the actual wall line with a tape measure rather than trusting the listing dimensions. And if you already know your wall square footage from a previous project or a builder’s plan, you can of course skip the geometry and start from the area directly. Either way, the number you want in hand before choosing anything in the store is gross wall area in square feet.
What doors and windows really subtract
You do not paint over doors and windows, so their area comes off the gross figure. The trade convention is to deduct about 21 square feet per door — that is a nominal 3 × 7 ft slab — and about 15 square feet for an average window. In the 416 ft² bedroom above, one door and two windows remove 21 + 30 = 51 ft², leaving 365 ft² of paintable wall. That is roughly an eighth of the room’s walls, which is exactly why skipping the deduction quietly pads every estimate.
The conventions are averages, and averages fail at the extremes. A pair of double doors, a sliding patio door, or a picture window can each be two or three times the standard allowance, so measure oversized openings and use their real areas instead of the defaults. The same logic applies to any wall surface that will never see paint: a tiled backsplash, a run of cabinets, or wainscoting along a dining-room wall should be measured and excluded too. Ten minutes with a tape measure here is cheaper than a fourth gallon at the register.
Why coverage ranges from 250 to 450 square feet per gallon
Every paint can prints a spread rate, and the fine print matters more than the brand. Major manufacturers such as Sherwin-Williams and Behr publish 350–400 square feet per gallon — but that figure assumes one coat on a smooth, sealed surface. Real walls are often neither. Orange-peel and knockdown textures add genuine surface area and soak up more material; heavy textures, stucco, or bare masonry can cut coverage by a quarter to a half. Porosity works the same way: bare drywall, fresh joint compound, and patched areas drink the first coat rather than letting it film out.
This is why a careful estimate uses a spread rate you choose deliberately rather than the most optimistic number in the range. For smooth, previously painted walls, the published 350–400 ft²/gal is realistic, and 350 is the conservative end worth defaulting to. For textured or porous surfaces, work down toward 250 ft²/gal — or prime first, so the finish coats can spread at something closer to their rated coverage. Whatever you pick, the formula is the same: paintable area, times the number of coats, divided by the spread rate, rounded up to whole gallons.
Primer is a decision, not a default
Primer earns its place in a handful of specific situations: bare drywall and fresh joint compound, patched or skim-coated areas, stains that need blocking (water marks, smoke, tannin bleed), glossy surfaces that need something to grip, and drastic color changes where a tinted primer can save you an entire finish coat. If none of those apply — you are repainting a sound wall in a similar color — a separate primer is usually unnecessary, particularly with modern paint-and-primer-in-one products.
When primer is warranted, it gets its own line in the math, not a share of the paint gallons. Primer is a single coat at its own spread rate, which typically runs lower than finish paint — around 275 ft²/gal is a representative figure, with products ranging from roughly 200 to 350. Priming the 365 ft² bedroom takes 365 ÷ 275 = 1.33 gallons, which means buying two gallons — or one gallon plus a quart if your primer line sells quarts.
One coat, two coats, or three?
Two coats are the standard interior finish, and the reasons are practical rather than ceremonial: the first coat seals and evens out the surface, and the second builds the uniform film that gives you consistent color and a washable, durable wall. Budgeting for one coat is realistic only in a narrow case — repainting in a similar color with a premium self-priming paint. A third coat enters the picture with drastic color changes, the classic offenders being deep reds and yellows over light walls, or a light color over a dark one.
Coats multiply the whole estimate, which is why they are the most expensive checkbox in any paint calculator. Our 365 ft² of paintable wall at two coats and 350 ft²/gal works out to 365 × 2 ÷ 350 = 2.09 gallons. Decide the coat count before you buy, not after the first coat dries patchy — a mid-project change of plan is how people end up making a second trip for a can from a different batch.
The quart question: buying smart at the register
Paint is sold in whole gallons, so estimates get rounded up — 2.09 gallons means three cans. Before you flinch at the third gallon, consider the arithmetic at the shelf: many paint lines also sell quarts, and when your exact need is barely past a whole number, two gallons plus a quart can beat a third gallon on price. The quart route works best when your measurement is trustworthy; it leaves little margin.
There is also a real argument for the extra gallon: leftover paint from the same batch is the only reliable touch-up supply you will ever have for that wall. Buying exactly to the estimate risks running out mid-wall, and finishing a wall from a new can of a different batch is how visible lap marks happen. Round up, keep the remainder labeled, and treat it as part of the job — not waste.
Where estimates go wrong
Under-buying almost always traces to one of three omissions: forgetting that the second coat doubles the area to cover, using a smooth-wall spread rate on textured or porous walls, or leaving the ceiling out of the plan until the roller is already wet. A ceiling adds its floor area to the job — the 12 × 14 room’s ceiling is another 168 ft², which pushes the two-coat purchase in our example from three gallons to four.
Over-buying is gentler on the project but harder on the wallet, and it usually comes from skipping the opening deductions, painting-in surfaces that were never going to be painted (that tiled backsplash again), or applying a worst-case spread rate to walls that are actually smooth and sealed. The cure for both failure modes is the same: measure the real walls, subtract the real openings, read the real can.
