How big is an acre, really? How much is 10,000 gallons? This visualizer turns abstract areas and volumes into things you already know the size of. Enter a quantity in ft², m², acres, or hectares (or ft³, m³, yd³, US gallons, litres, or 42-gallon oil barrels for volume), pick a reference object, and the tool draws your quantity as a grid of references at a common scale with a readout like "≈ 0.76 American football fields".

How It Works

  1. Pick area or volume mode. Each mode has its own unit list and its own reference objects; switching modes resets to that mode's default comparison.
  2. Enter the quantity (capped at 10⁹) and its unit. The tool converts to square or cubic metres with NIST SP 811 factors and divides by the reference's computed magnitude to get the count.
  3. Read the drawing: when your quantity is at least one reference, the SVG tiles that many reference outlines at a common scale — full tiles filled solid, the last partial tile filled to its exact fraction. When your quantity is smaller than one reference, the reference is drawn as an outline with your quantity as an area-true inset (the inset's drawn area is the exact ratio).
  4. Check the legend for the cited dimensions and their qualifiers — "external" for container envelopes, "at minimum depth" for the pool volume, "international standard" for the soccer pitch — and share the link; it carries the mode, quantity, unit, and reference.

Why is the soccer pitch labeled "international standard"?

IFAB Law 1 defines a RANGE for international matches — touchline 100–110 m, goal line 64–75 m — not a single size. The tool draws the 105 × 68 m dimensions used as the standard for major international competitions, and the legend says so. A specific stadium's pitch can legitimately differ within the Law 1 range.

Are the shipping container volumes the cargo space inside?

No — they are the ISO 668 EXTERNAL envelopes (6.058 or 12.192 m long × 2.438 m wide × 2.591 m high), and the legend labels them "external". Internal capacity is smaller (roughly 33 m³ for a 20-ft and 67 m³ for a 40-ft general-purpose box) and varies by manufacturer, which is why the citable external envelope is what the tool draws.

How is a volume drawn as a flat picture?

Each tile in the grid represents one full reference volume — 2,500 m³ of Olympic pool at minimum depth, one 42-gallon barrel — and the count of tiles is the true volume ratio. The tile's shape follows the reference's cited footprint where one exists (the container's 12.192 × 2.438 m deck footprint, the pool's 50 × 25 m plan). It is a counting picture, not a 3-D rendering.

Why is there no generic parking space or bathtub reference?

No citable primary source defines them. Parking-space dimensions are set by individual municipal codes (and the federal 2010 ADA Standards §502 fixes only the accessible space's width and access aisle, not its length), mattress and bathtub sizes are industry conventions that vary by manufacturer. This tool only draws references whose dimensions trace to a named published standard or rulebook.
