About Dryer Vent Duct Length Calculator (IRC M1502)
The dryer vent duct length calculator checks a clothes-dryer exhaust run against the residential code limit. How It Works
- Enter the straight exhaust duct length in feet — every foot of actual rigid duct in the run, but NOT the flexible transition duct behind the dryer. The code excludes the transition duct from the 35-foot budget (it is separately limited to 8 feet and must be listed to UL 2158A).
- Count the elbows by type. The 2021 IRC table distinguishes mitered (segmented) 4-inch-radius elbows from smooth long-radius elbows at 6, 8, and 10-inch centerline radii, each in 45° and 90° versions. If you do not know the radius of an off-the-shelf adjustable elbow, the conservative choice is the 4-inch mitered row.

Worked Example
A basement laundry needs 20 feet of straight 4-inch duct and two tight mitered 90° elbows to reach the rim-joist termination. The elbows cost 5 feet each per Table M1502.4.6.1, so the equivalent length is 20 + 2 × 5 = 30 feet — a pass with 5 feet of allowance remaining. Swap the two mitered elbows for 10-inch-radius smooth 90° sweeps at 1 ft 6 in each and the same run totals only 23 feet, leaving 12 feet of headroom for a future layout change.

Why do 90° elbows cost so much more allowance than 45° elbows?
A 90° bend forces the moist, lint-laden airflow through twice the direction change of a 45°, roughly doubling the pressure loss — and a tight mitered elbow adds turbulence a smooth long-radius sweep avoids. That is why the table charges 5 feet for a 4-inch-radius mitered 90° but only 1 ft 6 in for a 10-inch-radius smooth 90°. Where a run is tight against the limit, upgrading elbow radius buys back allowance cheaply.
What duct material and size does a dryer vent require?
