The rates are representative manufacturer values, not a product spec: the Latex-ite Airport Grade technical data sheet publishes 400–500 ft² per 4.75-gallon pail on smooth & previously sealed driveways and 300–400 ft² on rough & unsealed surfaces, and Black Jack quotes similar figures. The calculator uses 450 / 350 / 300 ft² per pail for smooth / aged / rough first coats, with a second coat at the smooth rate — after coat one, the surface is by definition previously sealed. How It Works

  1. Pick an entry mode: length × width (a straight residential driveway) or a direct square-footage entry for L-shaped or flared layouts — measure the sections separately and add them up.
  2. Choose the surface condition. Smooth means previously sealed with a tight, dark surface; aged means weathered gray but sound, unsealed or long past its last coat; rough means coarse, porous, or road-grade asphalt that drinks sealer.
  3. Set one or two coats. Two thin coats are the standard job (Black Jack requires them); the second coat covers at the smooth/previously-sealed rate because the first coat has sealed the surface.
  4. Optionally enter the total crack length to fill. Cracks up to 1/2″ wide get cold-pour filler before sealing — the calculator figures whole 1-gallon jugs at a representative 75 LF per jug.

Worked Example

A 12 × 50 ft driveway is 600 ft². It is weathered gray but sound — aged — so the first coat covers at the representative 350 ft²/pail rate: 600 ÷ 350 = 1.71 pails. The second coat goes over a freshly sealed surface and covers at the 450 ft²/pail smooth rate: 600 ÷ 450 = 1.33 pails. Pooled, the job needs 1.71 + 1.33 = 3.05 pails — buy 4, because sealer sells by the whole pail and every pail is the same product across both coats. Filling 150 ft of 1/2″ cracks first takes 150 ÷ 75 = 2 jugs of cold-pour crack filler. Apply at 55 °F and rising, wait at least 24 h between coats, and keep cars off for 24–48 h after the final coat.

Does the second coat really use less sealer?

Yes. Manufacturers do not publish a separate second-coat rate, but the first coat converts the surface into exactly what the datasheets call "smooth & previously sealed," so the calculator applies that 450 ft²/pail rate to coat two for every starting condition. On an already-smooth driveway both coats cover the same; on rough asphalt the second coat stretches roughly half again as far as the first.

Should I buy pails per coat or for the whole job?

For the whole job — that is how the calculator rounds. Every pail is the same product and the second coat goes down about 24 hours after the first, so leftover sealer from coat one pours straight into coat two. Rounding each coat up separately can force a whole extra pail: 500 ft² of smooth driveway needs 1.11 pails per coat, which is 3 pails pooled but 4 if you round each coat alone.

Do I fill cracks before or after sealing?

Before. Clean out cracks up to 1/2″ wide, fill them with cold-pour crack filler, and let the filler cure firm (Latex-ite says 24 hours, or once it is firm to the touch) before sealing over it.
