Capacity ratings changed in 2019: the U.S. Department of Energy's test procedure now runs portable dehumidifiers at 65 °F instead of 80 °F to reflect real basement conditions, so a unit that once advertised 60 pints may now be honestly rated near 35 pints for the same hardware. This table uses the current (new-basis) ratings — when comparing against an older unit or an old blog chart, remember the numbers shrank without the machines changing. How It Works

Pick the dampness tier using the table's own descriptions: slightly to moderately damp (50–75% RH — the space feels damp with a musty odor that may be intermittent), very damp (75–90% RH — consistently damp with damp spots on walls and floors), or wet (90–100% RH — walls or floors sweat, or seepage is present, possibly with high-load conditions like laundry drying).
  3. Read the published capacity range for your cell — for example 25–40 pints/day for a very damp room under 2,000 ft² — and the single suggested size: the top of the range for small-medium rooms (oversizing is the safe direction), or the published minimum for the open-ended large-room cells.
  4. Shop by the CURRENT pint rating. Because of the 2019 DOE test change, listings sometimes show both ratings ("50 pint (previously 70 pint)"); this table's numbers are on the new basis. Oversized units cycle less and pull humidity down faster; undersized ones run continuously and never catch up.
