How It Works

  1. Select the lumber species group. Pressure-treated southern pine spans the farthest; the redwood/cedar group (northern species, no incising) spans the least.

Worked Example

A ledger-attached deck needs joists spanning about 10 ft with a 30 in cantilever past the dropped beam, framed in pressure-treated southern pine at 16 in on center. Table R507.6 allows a southern pine 2x8 at 16" o.c. to span 11 ft 10 in (142 in), so the 120 in requirement uses 84.5% of the table span. The cantilever limit is one-fourth of the joist span, 142 / 4 = 35.5 in, so the proposed 30 in overhang passes, and the deck can extend 142 + 30 = 172 in from ledger to rim. A 40 in overhang on the same joists would fail the quarter-span check.

How far can a 2x8 deck joist span?

Per 2021 IRC Table R507.6 (40 psf live load, No. 2 grade), a southern pine 2x8 spans 13 ft 1 in at 12" o.c., 11 ft 10 in at 16" o.c., and 9 ft 8 in at 24" o.c. The Douglas fir-larch / hem-fir / SPF group spans 12 ft 6 in, 11 ft 1 in, and 9 ft 1 in at the same spacings, and the redwood/western cedar group slightly less. Tighten the spacing or step up to a 2x10 when you need more reach.

How is the deck joist span measured?

The joist span is the horizontal distance between the faces of the supports — from the face of the ledger board to the face (or centerline of the hangers) of the beam — and it does not include the cantilevered portion beyond the beam. Your actual span must be less than or equal to the allowable span from Table R507.6 for the species, size, and spacing you chose.

How far can deck joists cantilever past the beam?

IRC R507.6 limits the joist cantilever to one-fourth of the joist span (and not more than the tabulated maximum for short back spans). In the West, treated Douglas fir or hem-fir is common (use the DF-L/hem-fir/SPF group). Use the redwood/cedar group for naturally durable redwood, western cedars, ponderosa pine, or red pine.

Should I space deck joists at 12, 16, or 24 inches?

16" o.c. is the usual default: it suits most wood and composite decking and balances lumber count against span. 12" o.c. buys roughly 10-15% more span from the same member and is often required for diagonal decking or composite boards with short allowable spans. 24" o.c. saves joists but cuts the allowable span sharply and rules out most composite decking — always check the decking manufacturer's span rating against your spacing.
