The published table repeats 144 and 225 at the edges; the calculator resolves each boundary into the row the table lists it in first, so every whole-number area lands in exactly one band.
- Above 400 ft² the table ends, so the calculator recommends the next size class (56 in or larger) and raises a two-fan suggestion — a great room or long open plan is usually served better by two medium fans over the seating areas than by one oversized fan in the geometric center.
- Enter the ceiling height and the downrod card answers flush-or-rod: under 8 ft use a flush/hugger mount, 8 ft a 3 in rod, 9 ft 6 in, 10 ft 12 in, 11 ft 18 in, 12 ft 24 in, then 36, 48, 60 … 120 in at 20 ft. What size ceiling fan do I need for a 12 x 12 bedroom?
A 12 × 12 room is 144 ft², the top of the 76–144 ft² band, so the guidance answer is a 36–42 inch blade span. In practice many buyers go one step up to a 44 inch fan and run it slower — quieter and equally effective — but the published band is 36–42 in, and either choice easily clears the 18 inch wall clearance in a 12 foot room.
Why does blade span follow floor area instead of room volume?
A ceiling fan does not cool the air — it moves a blade-wide column of air down over the people below, and the cooling you feel is the breeze on your skin. Floor area decides how far that column has to reach, so the buying guides key span to square footage. Ceiling height matters separately: it decides the mounting (downrod) needed to put the blades 8–9 ft above the floor, not the span.
What is a downrod for, and what happens without one?

A sloped ceiling needs an angle-rated (sloped-ceiling) mounting kit, and the downrod must be long enough that the blades clear the slope by at least 18 inches on the uphill side, which depends on the pitch and the fan diameter, not just the peak height. What CFM should a ceiling fan have?
CFM (cubic feet per minute) is the fan’s measured airflow on high, and bigger rooms need more of it — but the ENERGY STAR sizing page keys its table to blade span, not CFM, so this tool deliberately does not invent numeric CFM targets.
