Pipefitter's Pocket Card — PVC Dimensions, Pressure Ratings & Offset Multipliers

One-page pipefitter's card: PVC Schedule 40/80 dimensions, pressure ratings with temperature derating, and rolling offset travel multipliers.

Updated August 22, 2026

The PVC and fit-up numbers a pipefitter reaches for between the spool sheet and the saw, on one card: ASTM D1785 Schedule 40 and 80 PVC outside diameters with walls and computed bores for the common trade sizes, the published D1785 pressure ratings for water at 73 °F, the temperature derating factors that shrink those ratings as the line warms, and the travel multipliers that turn a measured offset into a center-to-center length at each standard fitting angle.

Every cell is generated from the constants behind the pipe schedules and PVC pressure rating charts and the pipe offset calculator — bores are computed as OD − 2 × wall, and each multiplier is the cosecant of the exported preset angle, never a looked-up constant. Print it for the gang box; the steel schedule table lives on the plumber card, and the linked pages carry the 6″ PVC row, threading derates, and rolling offset math this card trims.

Water at 73 °F, non-shock, unthreaded PVC 1120 (hydrostatic design stress 2,000 psi). Threaded Sch 80 is rated at 50% of these values; do not thread Sch 40.

Max working pressure = 73 °F rating × factor. 140 °F is the PVC service limit; no threaded joints above 110 °F.

Travel = offset ÷ sin(angle), center to center; subtract two fitting take-outs for the cut length. Rolling offsets (true offset = √(rise² + roll²)): pipe offset calculator.
